Lowlight Legend: 1958 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible

An icon of elegance and engineering, this early-production ‘Lowlight’ cabriolet showcases the perfect union of Italian design and German reliability

FORT WORTH, TX, April 21, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ — Striking a chord with onlookers from the moment it debuted, the 1958 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible from the Ron Sturgeon Collection at the DFW Car & Toy Museum stands as one of the most refined and desirable models in the Karmann Ghia’s celebrated history. Built on March 26, 1958 and delivered from the Osnabrück factory just weeks later, this exquisitely restored ‘Lowlight’ convertible is a rare expression of postwar automotive artistry.

Originally developed in 1953, the Karmann Ghia Type 14 was the result of a remarkable collaboration between Volkswagen, coachbuilder Karmann, and the renowned Italian design house Ghia. The result was a car that defied expectations: elegant, aerodynamic, and surprisingly affordable. Introduced in coupe form in 1955 and followed by the convertible in 1958, the Karmann Ghia offered Beetle reliability beneath sculpted steel curves—and the world took notice.

This particular example is among the highly coveted ‘Lowlight’ models built between 1956 and 1959, so named for their lower-set headlights and the pure, uncluttered design that many enthusiasts regard as the most beautiful of the series. The car has undergone a complete refurbishment in Europe, with meticulous attention paid to restoring bodywork, interior, mechanicals, and electrical components to factory specifications. It remains in exceptional condition, having been properly stored and recently serviced.

Under the skin, the car retains the air-cooled Volkswagen engineering that made the platform so reliable. Enhancements for the Ghia included a wider body than the Beetle, providing improved cabin space and refined handling—further aided by a front anti-roll bar to reduce body roll and oversteer. The sculpted dashboard features two round instruments, and the car boasts a top speed of 116 km/h, plenty for leisurely touring with the top down.

“The early Karmann Ghia cabriolets are nothing short of rolling art,” said Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum. “This one, with its Lowlight design and top-tier restoration, is one of the finest we’ve had the pleasure to share. It’s timeless elegance, perfectly preserved.”

Displayed alongside more than 200 historic vehicles and 3,000 vintage toys and cultural artifacts, this 1958 Karmann Ghia Convertible is a centerpiece in a museum dedicated to design, storytelling, and automotive passion.
