WASHINGTON, DC, May 21, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ — Youth for Human Rights DC (YHR DC), in partnership with Miss Africa USA (MAUSA), recently hosted a dynamic series of events celebrating human rights, cultural empowerment, and leadership for young African women. The events highlighted education, advocacy, and community engagement, bringing together participants and multiple international dignitaries.
Springtime Art Walk: Celebrating Creativity and Human Rights
Youth for Human Rights DC kicked off the weekend with the First Friday ArtWalk, featuring the Youth for Human Rights International(YHRI)/United for Human Rights Springtime Art Exhibit. Three talented artists were showcased, and 136 visitors attended the event. A special highlight was Ropa Sandiswa, the Zimbabwean delegate to the 2025 UN Human Rights Summit and the Miss Africa USA community advocate, who assisted with the YHRI display and petition drive while wearing her full regalia. Her presence drew significant attention and excitement, underscoring the synergy of art, culture, and advocacy.
Passport DC: Building Global Connections
The YHR DC team and MAUSA representatives participated in Passport DC’s annual World Embassy Tour in Washington, DC, which featured open houses at 65 embassies. Led by Dr. Kate “Lady Kate” Ndi, a nurse and human rights advocate, the team—including Ropa Sandiswa as well as Nigerian-born Maryland residents Adeola Shonubi and Mercy Akowe—wore traditional attire representing their countries.
The team had appointments with the Ambassadors of Nigeria, The Gambia, and Cameroon, delivering YHRI portfolios and letters advocating for UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights education in schools. Ambassadors and staff engaged enthusiastically, praising the initiative’s focus on human rights, women, and children’s empowerment. Lady Kate also shared updates on her ongoing projects in Cameroon, including bringing clean water to six villages.
Formal Recognition at Fraser Mansion
In a special ceremony at the Fraser Mansion, home of the Church of Scientology National Affairs Office, MAUSA contestants were officially appointed as Presidents of their local Youth for Human Rights DC chapters—representing the state of Maryland and the cities of Greenbelt, MD, and St. Louis, MO. The event celebrated their commitment to leadership and human rights advocacy.
Lincoln Memorial Petition Drive
The weekend concluded with a petition drive on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, where participants engaged with numerous visitors, sharing information about human rights and distributing educational booklets. The sunny day drew many young people eager to learn, sign petitions, and get involved.
Through these events, Youth for Human Rights DC and Miss Africa USA demonstrated the power of collaboration, culture, and education to inspire young leaders and promote the values of human rights both locally and internationally.
